Production and Delivery of District Heating Substations for Copenhagen, Denmark
In recent years, Vestforbrænding has worked intensively on expanding its district heating network in Greater Copenhagen – partly in collaboration with Dalsia (former Brunata).

Project summary
Every day, hundreds of refuse collection vehicles tip Copenhagen's rubbish into a huge chute at Vestforbrænding north-west of the capital. From here, it is fed by crane to the 1000 ºC combustion ovens, where it is transformed into electricity and heat. Through district heating pipes, the heat is transported to an ever increasing number of customers.
”Since we started the project in 2006, we have increased the district heating network from 27.2 kilometres to 62.7 kilometres and the number of major customers from 136 to 400,” explains Mimmi Malm, Project Mana-ger at Vestforbrænding.
The project in waste incineration plant Vestforbraending helps the plant to extend its district heating network. During the first year Dalsia (former Brunata) supplied 35 district heating units OpTherma to new customers, which counts amongworld-renowned Novo Nordisk in Bagsværd. In the next 3 years Dalsia (former Brunata) continually delivers substation units to Vestforbrænding.
The units include small systems of 25 kW while the largest are almost 4,000 kW. The main parts, however, are between 100 and 1,000 kW.
Each of Dalsia's OpTherma district heating units is adapted to the individual customer's specific operational and property conditions. The development of the product for Vestforbrænding has therefore been both challenging and satisfactory.
The units have been supplied gradually and on exact dates – in order for the companies to adjust the production according to the conversion and the short intermissions that is a consequence of the convention to district heating.
Additional facts
Vestforbrænding is a waste management public company owned by 19 local authorities. The company's largest single activity is a large incinerator in Ejby at Glostrup. The incinerator's kiln capacity is up to 550,000 tonnes of waste per year. The incinerator is a thermal power plant. The energy released by the combustion of waste is converted for both electricity and district heating. The district heating is equivalent to approx. 75,000 households.
